Cold Ironing: are we behind the world?

It can be a debatable issue..We may confirm though, that Italy is trying to cope as much as possible with  the increasing need for lowering the pollution in ports…World wide it is evident  that cold ironing is one of the more effective responses for a lower environmental impact in ports.

Tefin has been actively working both in researching and training in developing expertise and experience in the installing of this type of systems thanks to its dedicated in-house division: switchboard and electrical distributors in LV and HV.

Our Division collaborates with and works on the development and supply of innovative and tailor-made solutions since the installations vary depending on the type of solution used and the type of vessel.

We have been working on a total of 10 ships so far and we are presently working on new projects: engineering, procurement and installation, all onboard with ships in dry dock or in navigation but without interruption of any routine activity of the ship.

Quite simply, shore connections can be used by ships to connect to the local power grid and turn off auxiliary engines while docked with relatively less environmental impact in ports.

Cold ironing permits emergency equipment, refrigeration, cooling, heating, lighting and other equipment to receive continuous electrical power while the ship loads or unloads its cargo.

In accordance with the current request for eco-friendliness, we strongly encourage and support the installation of an on-board shore power system.

All ships should quickly be getting ready to adopt this system in order to comply with European, Italian and global regulations!

Cool ironing can potentially eliminate also the local noise and the air pollution related to ships activity in ports.

Both exposure to air pollution and “noise” pollution associated with emissions from ships and other diesel engines at ports contribute largely to significant health problems.

For the maritime field the green path starts in ports!
