Cold ironing Barcellona
We have by now got accustomed to the term “cold ironing”, a term mostly unknown to the general public which, in short, means electrifying port infrastructures to gradually abandon fossil fuels.
In Italy, at least 10 ports are planned for cold ironing infrastructures. They are scheduled to be operational by March 2026.
The implementation of the electrification of the docks is obviously not simple and many ports are struggling to implement it. It is a major project as well as an investment that represents the first step of a global power revolution for greater sustainability and independence from fossil fuels.
There are several investments to be made for the upgrade, the improvement of all safety devices and all environmental protection and energy saving devices.
What are the challenges? The main ones seem to be:
- Costs: The adaptation of ships and ports requires significant investments.
- Standardization: Standardization of electrical connections and systems is needed to ensure compatibility between ships and ports across Europe.
- Port infrastructure: Many ports require major upgrades to their electrical infrastructure to provide sufficient power to ships.
In conclusion, the shipping industry is gradually adopting cold ironing, but there are still several issues to overcome. Collaboration between ship owners, ports and institutions is the key to accelerate and finalize this transition towards a more sustainable maritime transport.
