Complying with the 2021 IMO Cyber Security Guidelines Is a Necessary Requirement in Today’s Global Maritime Field!
Cyber security is a priority in the international maritime sector and we must be aware of it, ready and well prepared for it.
Not to mention that the Coronavirus is taking all of us to the digital world sooner than expected and this provides cyber criminals more opportunities to attack.
The maritime activity relies more and more on Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in order to optimize its operations. ICT is used to enable essential maritime operations, from navigation to propulsion, from freight management to traffic control communications, etc.
Consequently the risk of a cyber attack is spreading, is realistic and is a challenge! While cyber security risk is increasing, driven by global connectivity and usage of cloud services, a first step to cope with this risk is AWARENESS.
Unfortunately the awareness on cyber security needs and challenges in the maritime sector is currently still low to non-existent. Developing and implementing awareness, appropriate cyber security training to key people in the field, such as shipping companies, port authorities, etc., could be a helpful and necessary additional step.
As of January 1, 2021, cyber security must, be addressed by all ship owners and all people working in the shipping industry and incorporated into their Safety Management Systems!!
